Building Inspector
The building inspector is responsible for issuing building permits and overseeing the construction of all phases of projects being done within the city limits. 

The city uses a combination permit system with one permit issued per project to include all work associated with the project.

RESIDENTIAL.  All new one-family and two-family residences require a building permit.  Information to be submitted with an application for building a new residence includes:

Other projects for existing one-family and two-family residences that require a permit include basement finishing/remodeling, decks, additions, garages/sheds (120 sq. ft. or larger), swimming pools as per Municipal Code § 106-17, general remodeling, and any mechanical/structural changes (residential building permit application).  New or replacement roofing, siding, and/or same size window/door replacement do not require a building permit if there is no structural change/repair.

COMMERCIAL.  All new residences of three or more units, new businesses, fire sprinkler/alarm systems, and remodeling/alteration of existing facilities require a building permit.  Information to be submitted with an application includes:
  • a completed commercial building permit application
  • a site plan (location of the facility on the lot showing the setback distance from each property line) as applicable
  • a detailed plan of the project to include a set of the state approved plans as applicable

CONTRACTOR INFORMATION.  General, HVAC (heating, venting, and air conditioning), plumbing, electrical, and fire sprinkler contractors may be required to have a state of Wisconsin registration/credential/license (see PROJECT GUIDES-General Information below).  Information regarding requirements is available by contacting the Department of Safety and Professional Services at (608)266-2112 or by Email, and other state code information is available at WI Department of Safety and Professional Services.

OTHER PERMITS.  The building inspector also reviews and processes fence permit application requests as per Municipal Code § 106-16 (included with application), sign permit application requests as per Municipal Code Chapter 202 and home occupation permit application requests as per Municipal Code § 255-54.

GENERAL INFORMATION.  An application can be dropped off at city hall (505 3rd Street), mailed, faxed to (715)386-3385, or emailed.  It generally takes 2-3 days to process.  We contact the owner/applicant when a building permit is ready, and someone has to come to city hall to sign for the building permit and make payment (cash or check only) at that time.  The fee (cash or check only) for fence and sign permit applications should be submitted with the application, and we will mail the permit.
